What Is Therapy, Really?

So what is therapy?


Look, I get it — there are different orientations, theories, skills, interventions. All of that matters. Having knowledge matters. Being able to assess a client for safety matters. Diagnosing properly matters. Knowing when and how to use interventions matters.


But sometimes… therapy isn’t about any of that.


Sometimes the most important thing a therapist can do in a session is just be human.




Therapy Is More Personal Than People Think



Therapy is different for everyone.


What works for me might not work for you.

A therapist that is great for one client might not be the right fit for another.


Therapy is subjective.


It’s not just about credentials, degrees, or how “put together” someone seems. It’s about how you feel sitting across from that person. It’s about whether you feel understood, safe, and comfortable enough to open up.


Sometimes, excessive knowledge, excessive theory, or trying too hard to be “clinical” can actually get in the way of the relationship.


And without the relationship… nothing else works.




When I Realized That



I experienced this myself.


There was a time in my life when I was looking for a new therapist. I had a brief 15-minute in-person consultation with someone who was clearly very experienced.


And within those 15 minutes, I knew I didn’t want to work with her.


It wasn’t because she wasn’t smart.

It wasn’t because she wasn’t qualified.

It wasn’t because I didn’t trust her.


If anything — it was the opposite.


She felt too perfect. Too put together. Too polished.


And I remember thinking, this isn’t going to work for me.


So I walked out… and never went back.




What I Was Really Looking For



At the time, I didn’t fully understand it.


But looking back, I do now.


I wasn’t looking for someone to impress me.

I wasn’t looking for someone to “outsmart” my problems.


I was looking for a human connection.


I needed:


  • Someone down-to-earth

  • Someone real

  • Someone who could meet me where I was

  • Someone who didn’t feel above me, but with me



Sometimes, that’s what people want the most.


And sometimes… that’s exactly what they’re missing in their everyday lives.




Therapy Isn’t Just Skills — It’s Connection



Don’t get me wrong.


I want my therapist to know what they’re doing.

I want them to challenge me.

I want them to guide me.

I want them to use the right tools and interventions when it matters.


But all of that only works after the connection is there.


The relationship comes first.


The trust comes first.


The feeling of being understood comes first.


Without that, the rest doesn’t land the same.




My Approach to Therapy



This is something I carry into every session.


Yes, I’m trained.

Yes, I understand clinical work.

Yes, I use interventions, structure, and guidance.


But first — I show up as a human.


My style is:


  • Open

  • Honest

  • Down-to-earth

  • Collaborative



I don’t sit across from you as someone who has it all figured out.


I sit with you as someone who’s there to understand you, challenge you when needed, support you when it’s hard, and help you move forward in a way that actually makes sense for your life.


Sometimes we go deep.

Sometimes we get uncomfortable.

And sometimes… we laugh.


Because growth doesn’t always have to feel heavy to be meaningful.




Finding the Right Fit Matters



If there’s one thing I want you to take from this, it’s this:


Not every therapist is meant for every client.


And that’s okay.


It doesn’t mean therapy doesn’t work.

It doesn’t mean you’re the problem.

It just means you haven’t found the right fit yet.


The right therapist won’t just have the knowledge.


They’ll feel right to sit across from.
